Relationships, agreements and history; when you agree to something and you put your name behind it, amazing things can happen. An agreement made by two people can transcend multiple generations and have an impact on a community—one thread to pull us all together. We uncovered this and more during an interview with Jamie Hodge, Co-owner of Hodge Floors, and Hootie Solesbee, Vice President of Preconstruction at Harper General Contractors.
When you walk into Hootie Solesbee’s office, you might see his smiling face greeting you with a warm welcome, or you might notice some bright and colorful artwork from his children. If you look at his office walls, you will also see a handwritten construction estimate from 1961. This is a special piece of paper that means a lot to both Jamie and Hootie. It was an estimate written by Hootie’s grandfather, Jim M. Solesbee. The framed, handwritten estimate was for Jamie Hodge’s uncle, who would eventually build with Solesbee Construction. As a child, Jamie Hodge would experience first-hand this classic, colonial home, built by none other than Hootie Solesbee’s grandfather. As we stood together and admired this well-preserved piece of history, Hootie noted, “It is amazing that 63 years ago, this document was signed and still holds the Hodge and Solesbee name.”
With a family deeply rooted in the construction industry, it wasn’t long before Hootie found his passion for construction as well, which eventually led him to larger firms through various internships. Hootie joined Harper in 2006. He always knew he wanted to settle in the Upstate, but Spartanburg wasn’t really on his radar yet.
Harper General Contractors officially opened a permanent office in Spartanburg in 2013, marking a new chapter for both Hootie and the company. The timing was right and the transition was smooth…with the right people in the right place.
The Beginning of a Lasting Relationship
When asked about their first encounter, Hootie and Jamie fondly recall working together on projects at CC Woodson Community Center and Spartanburg Day School in 2008. Hootie, then an assistant project manager, and Jamie, a co-owner of Hodge Floors, quickly realized that their relationship was more than just business—it was the start of a lasting friendship. Over the years, they've collaborated on fifty-one projects, almost all of those being in Spartanburg. Harper General Contractors was heavily focused on growing in Spartanburg during those initial years and has now grown to cover the southeastern region, including five locations across North Carolina and South Carolina.
Their working relationship is built on a foundation of trust and mutual respect. Jamie emphasized that Harper General Contractor’s commitment to working with local companies aligns perfectly with Hodge Floors' community-oriented spirit. Hootie added, "I know that if Hodge is on the job, it is going to be done right."
Shared Values and High Standards
Both Harper General Contractors and Hodge Floors share a dedication to quality and community. Jamie praised Harper's organized job sites and seamless project management, making their work environment a pleasure. The two companies' commitment to excellence ensures that every project meets high standards, with a focus on customer service and satisfaction.
Their friendship also plays a crucial role in their professional relationship. They understand each other's working styles and can rely on one another during challenging times. One notable project in the works right now is the repurposing of the Upward Global Charter School where their combined expertise is helping them overcome obstacles, and they are both looking forward to a successful outcome.
Memorable Projects and Community Impact
As we looked over the list of projects, Hootie said, “As I look at this list, I don’t see the projects; I think of the people that we worked with and the memories from each.” Jamie responded, “It has been enjoyable to watch Harper grow and Spartanburg to embrace them. Harper has grown into multiple cities, and it has been fun to watch.”
Among the many projects they've completed, the Montgomery Building stands out as an iconic example of their collaborative efforts. Jamie remarked, "Harper builds quality and purpose-built projects," while Hootie acknowledged Jamie's excellent relationships with architects and local partners, which contributed to their success.
Their collaboration has not only benefited their respective businesses but also significantly impacted the Spartanburg community. Harper's growth into multiple cities, while maintaining a strong presence in Spartanburg, is a testament to their commitment to the area. Hootie, now a shareholder at Harper, reflected on his nineteen years with the company, noting the importance of close relationships and connections with people.
Advice for Aspiring Collaborators
For other business owners looking to form strong, lasting relationships, Hootie and Jamie offered valuable advice. Jamie said, “Focus on getting to know people for who they are, not just what they can do for you. Building genuine relationships based on trust and mutual respect is key to long-term success.”
As they look to the future, both Hootie and Jamie are optimistic about continuing their collaboration for many more years. Jamie expressed his excitement about Harper's growth and the ongoing development of Spartanburg. There is so much growth in Spartanburg, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
Harper General Contractors is dedicated to supporting Spartanburg through that growth, while also expanding their teams across Charlotte and the low country. This opens up a lot of opportunities for growth and new relationships. Hootie says, “We will continue what we are doing in our core markets but grow into new markets.”
The longevity of this relationship and shared history between Hootie Solesbee and Jamie Hodge exemplifies how shared values, mutual respect and a commitment to quality can lead to remarkable success in business and in life. Their story is a testament to the power of building strong relationships and community-focused business practices.
